COCKROACH INFESTATIONS – USEFUL INFORMATION: IDENTIFYING COCKROACHES
Cockroaches are oval and are flattened in appearance from top to bottom. Their heads are covered by a large, shield-like structure. They have two large eyes and two long antennae. With six long running legs attached to their thorax, they have been recorded at speeds up to three miles per hour.
In the adult cockroach wings may be present, absent or reduced, depending on the species. At the top of the abdomen cockroaches have a pair of jointed appendages, covered by specialized sensory hairs. These are used to detect air movement which can trigger an escape response.
The adult German cockroach is 10 to 15mm long. The Common or Oriental cockroach is 20 to 24mm long.
Cockroaches live in clusters. A pheromone causes them to cluster in harbourage areas such as cracks and crevices. This clustering helps illicit mating and helps in the survival chances of nymphal (infant) cockroaches. Cockroaches are frequently found indoors foraging for food, water and more suitable conditions.
In depth understanding of life cycle, reproduction and behaviour helps Safeguard to advise and administer effective control methods. Behaviour can also help identify where in the mating, reproduction and lifecycle a cockroach is. For example, once females have dropped their egg-case they become much more active, replenishing food and water.
SIGNS OF A GROWING COCKROACH INFESTATION
Infant cockroaches can shed between five to seven skins. Seeing these in harbourages can be a sign that an infestation is growing in size. Although cockroaches such as the German cockroach will often spend up to 75% of their time in harbourages and tend not to be seen moving around in the day, in larger populations where harbourage space is limited, they may well be seen moving around in the day time.
In the absence of pest control a high percentage of infant, or nymphal, cockroaches will survive into the adult stage. One single mating will last for the entire productive life of the female. The time between the hatching of one egg case and the formation of a new egg case is only six to 10 days. This demonstrates how prolific female cockroaches are in their reproduction.
Each female cockroach has the reproductive potential for up to 175 offspring. Approximately half of these infant cockroaches will be female. So it is possible to go from a few cockroaches in your premises to thousands in just a few months.
EFFECTIVE COCKROACH MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION
Female German cockroaches deprived of food and water experience difficulty in forming viable egg cases. This demonstrates the importance of good cleaning and sanitation in professional cockroach management programmes. Temperature is a key factor in determining whether cockroaches will infest a particular area. They prefer 24 – 33 degrees C.
Safeguard can provide deep cleaning and sanitation of business premises, as well as carrying out pest control. We can offer consultancy on effective cockroach pest management and prevention.
